Luis Fernandez was interviewed by Ricardo Brown and Lourdes Ubieta of WURN-AM (1020 Actualidad) this afternoon to discuss his thoughts and opinions on the John Edwards trial.
Yesterday, the Justice Department announced that it will not attempt to retry former presidential candidate John Edwards on corruption charges. Edwards was acquitted of one count on May 31 by a jury in North Carolina that could not reach a verdict on five other counts after more than 50 hours of deliberation.
The Justice Department had accused Edwards of using nearly $1 million in illegal campaign contributions to keep his pregnant mistress, Rielle Hunter, quiet and happy, as he mounted a second presidential bid in 2008.
Lanny Breuer, the head of the Justice Department’s criminal division, said prosecutors respect the judgment of the jury and would not bring the case to trial again.
