Columbia University Law Professor Proves Texas Executed the Wrong Man

Today, Columbia University law professor James Liebman said he and a team of 5 students have proven that Texas sentenced and executed to the wrong man for the 1983 murder of Wanda Lopez.

Professor Liebman’s report,  entitled “Los Tocayos Carlos: Anatomy of a Wrongful Execution,” found that Carlos DeLuna was executed in place of the real killer, Carlos Hernandez, who closely resembled DeLuna and had the same first name.

Wanda Lopez

The report, entitled “Los Tocayos Carlos: Anatomy of a Wrongful Execution,” traces the facts surrounding the murder of Wanda Lopez, a single mother who was stabbed in the gas station where she worked as a clerk in  Corpus Christi, Texas. De Luna maintained that he was innocent until the day he executed in 1989.

Professor Liebam argues that sloppy police work, the prosecution’s failure to pursue another suspect, and a weak defense investigation lead to DeLuna’s wrongful conviction and execution.
